This CD is both a direct result, and an application of, my book Exotic Scales. As I recorded and transcribed the brief demonstration tracks for the various exotic scales, I found myself saying: "Hey, that's good -- I should make a song out that!" When I later began revisiting these tracks I found that many of them fit together like pieces from the same puzzle. Working in my studio I combined the pieces, adding tracks and passages as necessary, effectively providing the 'glue' that holds it all together. These thirteen tracks are the result. An interesting upshot of this approach is that all of the tunes are, ostensibly, in the key of 'C', although they do modulate through various 'exotic' C scales.
All of the guitar and horn parts, and many of the piano parts, were recorded using a Brian Moore i2.5 Synth Axe' guitar. To be completely honest, I recorded the tracks using the digital guitar, cleaned them up, fixed timing, etc., then recorded the final cuts by playing the MIDI tracks back through a Roland JV-1010 synth.
