We pay tacit homage to our own unthinking rituals - bits and bytes, microwave ovens, cable TV - and knowingly sneer at the 'primitives,' whose magic may, indeed, be far more effective, far more powerful, and far more real, than our own. Look carefully at the face of the ruins, and you may catch a glimpse of what he has conjured.
